Blue Owyhee Gems Freeform Designer Cabochons and Sterling Silver Jewelry
Welcome to Blue Owyhee Gems new home. I try to provide the best and most unique freeform designer cabochons. I also make some sterling silver jewelry but my passion is making cabochons. I try to provide a selection of materials such as Willow Creek, Morrisonite, Graveyard Point Plume agate and other high quality materials. My true love is Fantasy Plume Agate from my Blue Owyhee Gem claim in the Owyhee Mountains in Oregon. I also mine Coyote Ridge Picture Jaspers in another region of the Owyhee Mountains as well.
This is my hobby. I love finding and then hand mining gem grade agate and picture jasper Then with a little luck I turn the rocks into collector grade cabochons. Making jewelry and selling my creations is secondary to having fun. Please realize it is like selling a piece of my soul every time I let one of my pieces go to a new home. I appreciate every purchase and thank all those that stop by my site even if just to browse.
I hand dig all Fantasy Plume Agate and Coyote Ridge Picture Jasper. l do purchase other agate and cabochon rough to make cabochons sold on this web site. I also now do all my own silver work for pendants sold here. I do not used automated machines to produce my cabochons like many others do. I beleive the stones natural properties will only remain true if it is treated properly. I make all my cabochons by hand in my shop.
There is something about using dynamite and heavy machinery to collect the stones that just does not ring true with me. Then sticking a preform onto a dop, placing it into a machine which does the cutting and shaping. Then throwing the cabochons into an auto-polisher to finish it just does not bring out the natural feelings within the stone. Yes, mass production does help keep prices lower but so does child labor overseas which is also used to produce thousands of cabochons sold on the internet every day, not to mention many retail stores and bead shops. It is your choice. Stones have feelings too.
A beautiful cabochon is a beautiful cabochon regardless how it was made. I personally just do not want to sell pieces made overseas or by mass production methods.
*** A note on custom cabochons. True custom freeform designer cabochons are made one at a time by hand, period. I feel a high dome is required for the best quality to really make the stone pop. I will only make a flat top cabochon if I am worried I could lose a precious scene if I cut into the stone. There are times when a stone actually looks better with a flat top. Custom means custom, not short cuts for bigger profits. My prices reflect the rareness of a cabochon and the design on it. A low price only means that I feel the scene on the cabochon is less rare but the quality is as high as my most expensive pieces on my site.
